Though every prominent musician is famous for a different reason, they all have certain things in common. There are a few key qualities that helped these artists get to where they are today. By emulating these characteristics, you, too, can get one step closer to music stardom.
Here are the four qualities of a successful musician.
1. Work hard.
Taylor Swift’s country music dreams started young. That’s why she didn’t let anything stop her from becoming successful- not location, not age, and certainly not anyone else’s opinions.
When Taylor was 14, she and her family moved from Pennsylvania to Nashville so that she could pursue a career in country music. Taylor played shows, entered karaoke contests, and worked as a songwriter before releasing her debut album at the age of 16. She’s now one of the biggest names in music.
Now, at 26, Taylor is taking her first break from music in ten years.
2. Be patient.
Ed Sheeran grew up singing in his church choir. He also learned to play guitar at a very young age, and he started writing songs in high school. When Ed was 16, he dropped out of school to move to London and pursue music. He played hundreds of shows and released music independently for several years before capturing the attention of Elton John and Jamie Foxx.
In 2011, Ed was finally signed to a record contract and released his debut album. He went on to top charts, win Grammies, and sell out Madison Square Garden.
Ed’s journey to his long-awaited stardom is best described in his song “You Need Me, I Don’t Need You.”
3. Be modest.
Adele is a multi-platinum and Grammy award winning artist. She also holds several Guinness World Records thanks to her incredible music sales. Her song “Hello” was the first song to sell more than a million digital copies in its first week in the US.
In 2012 and 2016, TIME named Adele as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Despite all of her fame and success, Adele is still hailed as one of the most down-to-earth celebrities in the media today. She is a noteworthy feminist and LGBTQ+ icon. She often performs at charity functions and is a major contributor to MusiCares.
Adele’s modest demeanor shines through her humble “Hello” music video.
4. Get creative.
Lady Gaga created a name for herself with her crazy costumes and incredible shows. Her unique style redefined what a “pop star” looked like. Young starlets such as Miley Cyrus and Nicki Minaj traded in Britney Spears-esque crop tops and tight pants for Lady Gaga’s “anything goes” mentality.
In recent years, Lady Gaga has taken a step back from her eccentric musical stylings to focus on other things. She starred in the hit show American Horror Story. Now that she is returning to the music scene, Lady Gaga is getting back in touch with the incredible artist that she is beneath the crazy fashion and pumping beats.
Lady Gaga’s most recent release, “Perfect Illusion,” captivates her creativity in reinventing herself into a truer version of who she is.
To be successful as a musician, you also have to be hardworking, patient, modest, and creative. Emulate what you see in your favorite artists as you follow in their footsteps.
