How Beyoncé Received 9 Nominations at the 2017 Grammys

In April of 2016, Beyoncé released her sixth album, Lemonade, and since then the album has been soaring with success. For the 2017 Grammys, Lemonade and several of its singles received not one, not two, but a total of nine Grammy nominations. Beyoncé may be one of the most famous artists in the world, but even the most famous of artists aren’t accustomed to receiving nine Grammy nominations in one night.

Here’s how she did it.

1. She shared her emotional experience with her fans.

One of the most alluring parts of Lemonade was Beyonce’s raw emotions, shared through powerful poetry, dramatic visual scenes, and moving lyrics. The story of a scorned woman and her path to forgiveness is not only relatable to Beyonce’s fan base, but it also sparked interest as fans speculated whether the story had a more personal meaning.

2. She made an artistic style change.

Beyoncé is known for switching things up to stay at the top of the game, but no one was expecting her to release a 45-minute-long video album following months of silence. Her intricate and poetic storyline drew in millions of views, gaining her the nominations for best Music Film, Album of The Year and Best Urban Contemporary Album.

3. She took a politically charged position.

Beyonce made several headlines this past year by taking a firm stance on the rising movement Black Lives Matter. Not only did Beyonce pay tribute to Malcolm X, but the video for her single “Formation” made multiple references to the movement. Her willingness to make a statement, and the controversy behind, it led to views, and the “Formation” video receiving three nominations.

Not many can say they’ve reached the same level of stardom as Beyoncé, but by following these tips, you can be well on your way to your first Grammy nomination.
