Staying focused on your career goals can be difficult when so much of your work brings immediate gratification. As soon as you upload a video, you’re flooded with kind comments, likes, and shares. However, no matter how good it feels in the moment, your social media career will never grow beyond that if you don’t stay focused on the future.
Have a clear vision of what you want for your future.
One of the best ways to motivate yourself towards your future goals is to create a vision board. First, think about what you want your future to look like. Is there a certain creator you emulate? Who is your dream sponsor? What about a business you’d like to start or a collab you’d love to make?
Print out or draw pictures that remind you of these goals. Then, arrange them onto a poster board and hang it next to your computer or wherever you edit your videos. When you start to lose sight of your goals, just glance up at the vision board to remind yourself what you’re working towards.
Make a list of realistic, attainable goals.
The vision board is for your dreams, but you need to be realistic as well. Make a list of goals that you know you can realistically attain. Ensure that they’re actionable, and give yourself a time frame.
Write this list out by hand and hang it next to your vision board. You may also consider writing a copy of your goal list in the notes app on your phone so that you always have it on hand. As you work towards your goals, cross out the ones you complete to help you visualize your own success.
Be careful not to compare your progress to someone else’s.
As a vlogger, it’s extremely easy to compare your own success to others’. With everyone else’s success displayed in their subscriber and view counts, it’s important to resist the temptation to compare your channel to someone else’s too often. Instead of bringing you down, their success should motivate you.
Strive to see other vloggers as collaborators instead of competition. YouTube has such a large audience base that there’s room for every creator at the table. Just because someone has more subscribers than you now doesn’t mean your channel will never reach the same milestone. Besides, being the vlogger who’s encouraging instead of jealous will help you make more friends and better connections in the YouTube community.
Don’t settle for less than you’re worth.
As a growing creator, it can also be tempting to jump at any sponsorship offer you receive. However, if you allow one company to make you work for less, than the next sponsor will expect the same treatment. Instead, check out this post to learn what you should be charging for sponsored content.
Place value on yourself and the work you do, even if it means sacrificing a sponsorship or two as you’re still growing. There will be plenty of opportunities to work with companies who recognize the value of a sponsorship with you.
In order to stay focused on your career goals, find ways to visualize what you want your future to look like. Know your worth and don’t settle for less than your work deserves.
