How Rhett and Link became YouTube Celebrities

In 2006, lifelong best friends Rhett McLaughlin and Charles “Link” Neal, better known as Rhett and Link, quit their jobs as engineers and started posting videos on YouTube. In 2012, they created a daily talk show called Good Mythical Morning, which has passed 11 million subscribers. But how did two college engineering majors become some of the biggest names on YouTube?

Here are some ways that Rhett and Link grew their fan base.

1. They remind viewers everywhere of their own best friends.

One of the best parts of watching their videos is seeing how genuine they are. While some YouTube celebrities may “act” in their videos and have a “YouTube persona,” viewers can tell that not only are Rhett and Link acting like themselves, but they are truly lifelong best friends.

They pick on each other, laugh at each other, and help each other in any way they can. People like seeing true friendships and people being themselves. Rhett and Link give them just that.

2. Viewers never know what to expect.

When YouTube channels post videos every day, it may be hard to come up with original content, but Rhett and Link are the kings of originality. Ranging from food taste tests to testing different products to creating songs to playing with fire, the two try out something new and crazy every day.

Their viewers love it, and they love it. It’s always a new experience.

3. They involve their audience.

To have a successful following on YouTube, the YouTuber must have some kind of connection with his or her viewers. The people watching want to do more than just watch videos. To include their fans, Rhett and Link, on top of other things, created The Wheel of Mythicality.

At the end of each episode, the two spin the wheel, which will land on a random improv scene that the two must immediately act out. Not only do the fans decide what is on the wheel, but they can submit videos of themselves introducing the wheel, which has a chance of appearing in the episode.

The Wheel of Mythicality happens at 12:42.

Rhett and Link became YouTube celebrities through a lot of sacrifice and a lot of hard work. Follow in their footsteps down your own path towards YouTube fame.
