Many YouTubers love to make videos in which they share a story or their opinion about a relevant topic. While it’s sometimes entertaining to listen to these stories, viewers can get bored all too quickly.
Here are some ways to hold onto the viewer’s attention throughout a storytelling video.
1. Hook the viewer.
Speak to the camera as if it’s a person you’re trying to start a conversation with. Phrases such as “I don’t know if I should be telling you this” or “Maybe this has happened to you” are great examples of hook lines. The hook line should tell the audience exactly what they will take away from what you are about to say or why should they listen to it.
2. Get to the point.
Don’t waste any time beating around the bush. Useless details will drag the story out and bore the viewer.
Also, pay close attention to the minute count of your video. Viewers don’t want to spend ten minutes listening to a story that could’ve been told in two minutes. By making it short and to the point, you’ll have a video that’s more likely to be watched all the way through.
3. Be active.
Nothing is worse than someone sitting in front of a camera speaking in monotone. Be energetic and active while telling your story.
Don’t be afraid to act out parts of the story. This is a common technique in stand-up comedy and can be applied to all storytelling. For example, if your story includes a man with a British accent asking for directions, adopt the character and speak in a British accent.
4. Don’t veer off topic.
If you get distracted, so will your audience. Get through the story without bringing up anything that isn’t relevant. If there are other things that you want to talk about, wait until the end of the video.
