To keep yourself on task and help loved ones understand that you’re at work, establish strict “office hours” for yourself. Dedicate several hours every day to working. Make sure you keep the same hours every day. Let your friends and family know that during this time, you will be unavailable.

Create a dedicated working space.

Even when you work from home, you still ought to create work-life balance. It can be hard to edit a video if you’re waiting for the dryer to finish its cycle. To help you separate your job from your household duties, create a space that physically separates them.

The best way to do this is to create a dedicated working space. Ideally, you would have a home office with a desk, a computer, and a door to close you off from the rest of the house. However, if you don’t have a spare room, you can create a dedicated working space anywhere in your house.

If you have a desk, put it against an empty wall and use this as your working space. You could also create a small setup at the end of your dining table, on the kitchen counter, or at the coffee table. Stick to a morning routine.

When you work from home, you may be incredibly tempted to sleep in or try to work from your bed. While they seem like good ideas, either can severely cut into your productivity. In order to do your best work, you need to start your day on the right foot by sticking to a morning routine.

Think of your morning routine as what you would be doing if you were leaving the house for an office job. You should wake up early enough to exercise, take care of your pets, meditate, etc. Then, leave yourself enough time before your “office hours” start to eat breakfast and get ready for the day.

Even if you don’t think of yourself as a “morning person,” waking up early and establishing a routine can help you get more work done throughout the day. Then, because you’ve gotten an early start, you’ll have plenty of time to spend with family and friends who work typical jobs when they’re off.

Schedule breaks and get out of the house.

Working from home doesn’t mean you need to be working the entire time. As with any job, you should schedule breaks for yourself throughout the day. Give yourself time to step away from the computer, eat lunch, text a friend, etc.

You should also allow yourself to work away from home sometimes. Take your laptop to a cafe to edit or respond to emails from a coffee shop. Call your manager as you walk around the block. If you have other friends who work from home, you might even invite them to join you.

Working from home can be as challenging as it is rewarding. If you give yourself dedicated office hours and a working space, then you can increase your productivity and success.
