How to Break Free From Songwriter’s Block

Even Taylor Swift has days when the words just don’t seem to flow. Songwriter’s block is something that ever musician faces, but the good news is that it’s just as easy to overcome!

Here’s how to finally break free from songwriter’s block.

1. Journal your feelings.

Songwriting is essentially sharing your emotions with the world. If you can’t get them out through lyrics, try simply writing out how you’re doing as you see fit. Grab the nearest notebook and jot down your worries, heartaches, and happy times.

When you’re finished, look back at what you’ve written. There’s a song in there somewhere.

To help yourself concentrate, turn on some soothing music as you write.

2. Try writing in a different genre.

If you’re a country singer, write a hip-hop song. If you’re a rapper, compose a ballad. If you’re a rocker, try your hand at pop.

Though it may not turn out “performable,” this exercise will challenge you to think in new ways and get the ideas flowing again.

Beyonce blew the audience away when she crossed genres and performed with The Dixie Chicks at the CMAs.

3. Take a hike.

Next time you’re stumped for a song, get out in nature and write about what you see. Does the chilly wind remind you of what happened last Christmas? Is the sun like your loved one’s smile?

Nature has been aspiring writers and performers since music was invented. Get outside to make the lyrics flow like a river.

Performers like Taylor Swift have been topping the charts with nature-inspired tunes.

Beating songwriter’s block is really about challenging yourself to think in new ways. Follow these tips to overcome songwriter’s block the next time you’re at a loss for words.
