This past Sunday, Lady Gaga gave the performance of a lifetime when she literally flew down onto the Super Bowl stage. As a rising artist, it may be hard to imagine performing at such a large-scale event, but you never know what may be around the corner. When it comes to your next big gig, how are you ever supposed to know what to wear?
Here’s how superstars choose their outfits.
1. They get some lyrical inspiration.
When the Super Bowl XLIX halftime show began in 2015, all eyes were Katy Perry and her giant tiger, aligning with the opening song, “Roar.” The mechanical feline was not the only piece of her performance taken from the song, however. Her fiery dress was inspired by lyrics “dancing through the fire,” which Perry repeats multiple times throughout the song.
The connection of the song to both the props and the outfit allowed Perry to create a more theatrical performance that better engaged the audience. Watch her entire performance below.
2. They consider important current events.
Coldplay may have headlined the Super Bowl 50 halftime show in 2016, but it was Beyonce who really made the headlines when she and her army of females marched onto the field. Her choice homage to Malcolm X was made clear in her outfit, drawing attention to the Black Lives Matter movement that had emerged over the past few months.
While controversial, her bold choice of outfit and relevance to the current political topic got her noticed, and it had people talking about the performance for weeks to come. Watch the full performance below.
3. They plan out their choreography first.
If you’re going to be flying through the air while simultaneously singing and doing flips, you’re going to need an outfit that won’t get caught in the ropes, or your face, for that matter. In the most recent Super Bowl, Lady Gaga did just that by selecting a tight, silver leotard and matching boots.
Rather than going with one her more flowy, over-the-top outfits, her more simple selection allowed her to complete her performance with ease and to nail all the flips in the process. Checkout the whole halftime show below.
Outfits are a great way to express a style or make a statement, and the best part about them is that you can take them in whatever direction you’d like. Regardless of what you choose to do with the outfits, make it bold and make it count.
