5 Secret YouTube Features

YouTube is truly a gold mine of Easter eggs and secret features. Here are five secret features that you can try out, tell your friends and fans about, and even incorporate into your videos.

1. Make YouTube do the Harlem Shake.

Unless you were living under a rock in 2013, you probably remember the Harlem Shake. As a quick refresher, the Harlem Shake was a viral meme that took the form of videos of people dancing comedically. More specifically, a Harlem Shake video would start with one person dancing to the song “Harlem Shake.” Then, a large group of people would start dancing in costumes.

If you type the words “do the Harlem shake” into the YouTube search bar, the physical features of the search page will start doing the Harlem Shake.

2. Check out YouTube LeanBack.

YouTube has an awesome alternate website called “YouTube LeanBack.” If you go to this website, you will find a version of YouTube that shows every video you love in full screen and high definition. You can also navigate the website by using only the keyboard or only the cursor.

This website is designed to let you “lean back” and watch YouTube videos in the same way that you would watch television or movies.

3. Make your search page look like the Doge meme.

“Doge” is another Internet meme that emerged in 2013. It consists of pictures of a Shibu Inu dog and blurbs of comedically broken English in colorful text. For example, one famous Doge meme graphic features the dog morphed into a Twinkie, surrounded by blurbs such as “much cake,” “do want,” and “such delishus.”

If you type “doge meme” into your search bar on YouTube, the search page will turn into a doge meme graphic.

If you search “doge meme” in YouTube…

4. Play the game Snake on a video.

The game Snake is like the mascot of iconic computer games. Everyone loves the simple but surprisingly addictive game. You use the arrow keys to direct a constantly moving snake towards small squares that make the snake’s tail longer. The game gets more challenging the longer the snake gets because you have to make sure to not hit the boundaries of the game or run into your own tail.

On YouTube, the “loading” icon can turn into a snake, and you can play the game on any video. To do this, click on any video, pause it, hold the left arrow key for two to three seconds, and then hit the up arrow key.

This game is especially fun to play when you’re waiting for a video to load. Check out this video for more information, and try playing the Snake game on it.

5. Use the Force on YouTube.

The website designers of YouTube are obviously big fans of Star Wars because they created an awesome Star Wars related secret feature.

If you type “use the Force Luke” into the search bar, you will be able to move the videos on the search page around with your cursor. Just like the Jedis from Star Wars can use the force to move things around without touching them, you can use the Force on YouTube.

YouTube is an amazing website with tons of secret features for you to try out. Always remember that YouTube can be used for an infinite number of purposes, so make the most out of the website.
