Wu-Tang Clan has been working at broadening their fanbase for over twenty years and have seen the benefits along the way. Their albums have gone platinum multiple times over, but how did they do it?
Bands of any genre can pick up on three things that made Wu-Tang Clan an empire.
1. No one gets anything done alone.
Wu-Tang is proof that bands need a large crew. With nine members, Wu-Tang showcases a variety of personalities. Fans love to memorize pieces of trivia about each member.
When nine rappers come together with a like-minded vision, they can create triumphant songs. Like with group projects, some members work harder than others.
2. Don’t shy away from side projects.
Some of the most memorable albums from Wu-Tang members are actually solo albums. When an individual makes a great album on the side, they still represent the group as a whole. This way, each member can pursue their own vision while continuing to bring attention to the band.
The best examples of this are represented by Raekwon’s 1995 album Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Ghostface’s Fishscale, and GZA’s Liquid Swords.
3. Always be touring.
If they aren’t touring together, Wu-Tang has members on the road. Raekwon and Ghostface often tour in tandem, as they are known for being a great duo. Just as bands before them, the long hours on the tour bus and on stage pay off. Fans come from far and wide.
Touring has brought Wu-Tang to foreign markets that they wouldn’t have been dreamt of during their humble beginnings.
Remember to grow fan bases by working together in large groups, standing out while being in the group, and hitting the road. Any band can do this if the members are talented enough.
