The 3 Steps To Getting Your Video Monetized

Over the past year, YouTube has made several major changes to its channel monetization policies. However, even if your channel is monetized, individual videos are still subject to a case-by-case review. For the videos on your channel to be monetized, they must follow the guidelines set in place by the platform to protect viewers, advertisers, and copyright holders alike.

Here’s how to ensure your video will be monetized.

1. Your channel must be eligible for monetization.

To be eligible for monetization, a channel must meet certain criteria. You have to have at least a thousand subscribers and a certain amount of watch time. For a thorough look at what criteria your channel must meet, check out this post.

Here’s a video tutorial on how to enable monetization for your YouTube channel.

2. The video must be advertiser-friendly.

If a video isn’t advertiser-friendly, then YouTube can’t run ads on it. Without the ads, a video can’t be monetized. In order for a video to be deemed suitable for advertisers, it must meet another set of criteria, which you can find here.

When creating a video, ask yourself if the content could be considered family-friendly. In general, advertiser-friendly videos avoid strong language and sensitive topics.

3. You must have the commercial rights to both the video and the audio.

In order to prevent users from making money off of someone else’s work without permission, YouTube requires you to have the commercial rights to all video and audio content you upload. As a content creator, you should be good in most cases, as the majority of what you uploaded is original content. However, if you use a song, graphic, or other video element created by someone else, then you must have that person’s permission in writing to use his or her work to make money.

Another important copyright law content creators should be familiar with is the Fair Use Act. This act provides the legal guidelines to how and why you can use someone else’s work without permission. To learn everything you need to know about the Fair Use Act, read this post.

Along with the criteria listed above, a video must also comply with YouTube’s Partner Program policies, Terms of Service, and Community Guidelines in order to be eligible for monetization.
