As most creators are aware, YouTube takes copyright protection extremely seriously. It has strict policies and automated filters in place to protect copyright holders both on and off the platform. The copyright takedown request process enables these copyright holders to ask YouTube to have content they own removed from the platform. Recently, YouTube rolled out a new webform that makes it easier to file these claims.
Here’s what you need to know about YouTube’s new copyright webform.
The form can be found in YouTube Studio.
To access the copyright webform, you first need to go to your YouTube Studio. Then, look at the left panel under your channel icon. Click on the copyright tab, which is represented by the copyright symbol.
Then, in the top right corner, select “new removal request.” The form that appears is the copyright webform. If you’re having trouble finding it, you can also access the form directly here.
You can schedule a takedown seven days in advance.
Whenever a creator has a copyright takedown request filed against them, it can hurt their channel with a copyright strike, loss of monetization on a video, etc. As a creator yourself, you may be hesitant to make a takedown request. If you would like to give the offender a chance to make amends first, then you should schedule your takedown in advance.
With this feature, the person you filed the request against will have up tp seven days to remove the video. If they take it down before YouTube removes it for them, then they won’t receive a copyright strike. However, if they don’t take action, then YouTube will remove the video anyway and give the channel a strike.
Misuse of the webform can hurt your channel.
Before you submit a copyright takedown request, you need to consider if the video is truly breaking copyright law. For example, if someone re-uploaded one of your videos in its entirety or posted an illegally recorded version of your live show, then you would likely be justified in making the request. However, if someone used part of your videos in a critical review of your channel or as part of a news report, then they might be protected under fair use laws.
If you continue with your copyright takedown request, then you will be required to provide your full legal name, address, phone number, and email address. If you enter false information or file a request for content you don’t own, then your channel could be suspended. There could also be legal action if you misuse the form, so be sure that you’re taking any copyright takedown requests you make seriously.
The new copyright webform makes it easy for anyone with a YouTube account to file a copyright takedown request. However, you should tread carefully and read through the form and YouTube’s copyright policies before filming a claim.
