YouTube is still such a new and fresh platform. Because of this, there aren’t many status quos or social norms on what not to do on YouTube. But there are some pretty big ones that every YouTuber should be aware of, especially as a beginner. Here’s how to avoid them.
1. Avoid Copying
Any type of art is made with a mixture of inspiration and personal creation. It’s important to keep that in mind when making your awesome videos. Are you simply copying another creator or using them as inspiration?
Originality is key when it comes to branding yourself and making a statement on YouTube. When you begin taking too much inspiration from others, not only do the creators notice. but your viewers do too!
2. Avoid ‘Broad Channels’
Broad channels are ones that do not have a specific brand or theme to them. For example, some days you’ll post traveling videos, fashion videos, or cover videos. This confuses your audience because there is cohesion. It’s important to not branch out too far in your channel to the point where there is no set theme.
It’s better for your channel growth if you decide on a channel theme and the demographic that accompanies it. Let’s say you make traveling videos but you occasionally like to vlog about your day. This does not derail too far from your theme and keeps your viewers interested!
3. Avoid 20 Minute Videos
People have short attention spans, so it’s rare a viewer will want to stick around and watch your video if it’s 20 minutes long. It is also imperative to keep in mind how long your video time is. You might very well be dragging on for no reason!
Once you begin recording, say all you have to say despite any time limits. Once you go to the editing block, try to cut down as much as possible so that you’ll be concise and keep your viewers engaged.
These top three mistakes are easy for any YouTube creator to make. Always keep in mind how your videos are coming across and if they’re continuing to bring in more views. Engagement is one of the most important parts of channel growth, and these mistakes could cost you!
