New York brothers Short Fuze (Leroy Brown) and Highrowglyphix (ShaQuille Brown) are quickly emerging as a celebrated rap duo through Conceptz. Both brothers collaborated in 2011 to advance their musical aspirations.
Short Fuze told Music Industry Quarterly that the decision to pair up made sense as the brothers shared good chemistry and were both concept writers. “He [Highrowglyphix] takes my ideas runs with them,” Short Fuze added.
The duo’s first project together was a mixtape titled Euphoria. A compilation of 10 songs, Euphoria reflected the brothers’ eclectic personalities and music tastes. The tape rose to popularity across several music sites and accumulated over 20,000 downloads on Datpiff. One of the song’s even made it to MTV’s 10 on Top. It was also broadcast at Colorado Rockies games at the stadium and during their broadcasts.
The duo then went on a hiatus to focus on releasing their debut album titled Conceptz The Album. The duo has experimented with conceptual rap in their debut album. They define conceptual rap as a creative blend of Short Fuze’s penchant for R&B and Highrowglyphix’s love of heavy metal. The single I’m Tryna Go is a good example of conceptual rap. Post the album’s release, the duo landed a performance at the BET Awards after party in Los Angeles.
The duo then worked on releasing three more mix tapes titled Speakers Loud, Ex-Girlfriends and Grown & Sexy. They also released 20 singles every Friday for 20 weeks. These singles included features with artists such as Rick Ross and Gucci Mane.
Their mixtape Marble Floors & Gold Ceilings featured R&B legends such as Wiz Khalifa, MelodiQ and Tony Toni Tone. According to the duo, the mixtape is the best embodiment of their work and reflects their struggle as independent artists. It also conveys their love for music and their perspectives on the current music industry.
In September 2014, the duo release the single Love Jones, which earned the 17th spot on Billboard’s Hot Singles Chart. The music video for Love Jones was featured on Popular TV networks such as MTV, VH1 and Aspire. Later, in June 2015, they released another single titled Funky 5 featuring MelodiQ. The single went on the ballot for consideration in the 58th Grammy Awards for Best Video. The single also earned the 14th spot on Billboard’s Hot Singles Chart.
Conceptz’ accomplishments are unprecedented and are setting a new standard for rap duos. Hydra management announced the duo’s next project, which is in the form of an EP titled CERTIFIED. The EP introduces the rap stylings of Lucids and Nomads, long time friends of the duo. The EP demonstrates the diversity of the duo and their seamless collaborations with other artists. It is rich in Raw Rap tracks that have captivating lyrics and styles. Each one of their tracks leaves a profound message, consistent with their trend to include a concept in every production.
It’s a long, successful road ahead for Conceptz!
