Every quarter, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki publishes a letter to the community on the creator blog. She reflects on the platform’s success and outlines its plans for the upcoming months.
Her last letter of 2019 has several important takeaways for creators, so here is everything you need to know.
There is room for everyone to succeed on YouTube.
With the limited number of slots on the trending page, it’s easy for any creator to feel discouraged about their success. You may worry that you’ll never reach a million subscribers because there are already so many big channels. Maybe the constant changes to AdSense scare you.
However, you don’t need to be afraid of never succeeding. According to Susan Wojcicki, sixty-five percent more creators have a million subscribers or more than last year. She also cited the fact that the number of creators earning five or six figure incomes has grown by over forty percent. With these numbers only rising, there is room for every creator, including you, to succeed on the platform.
The new YouTube Studio will help creators get more of the features they want.
When YouTube was first launched, it utilized Classic Studio, which limits how quickly the platform can roll out updates. However, over the past few months, YouTube has been testing YouTube Studio beta, which is going to move out of beta and completely replace Classic Studio in the new year.
The switch to YouTube Studio will enable the platform to give creators more of the features and tools they’ve been requesting. It will include a new dashboard, powerful analytics, and real-time performance metrics.
New tools will protect your monetization.
One of the biggest issues creators face is the demonetization of their content. Whenever a video doesn’t perfectly align with the platform’s strict advertiser-friendly guidelines, it runs the risk of losing all ad revenue. However, to address this issue, YouTube is running experiments that match edgier content with advertisers who are interested in it. These videos are marked with a yellow monetization icon.
YouTube is also updating its policies to separate video game violence from real-world violence. While the platform’s main priority lies in protecting viewers from real-world violence, the new policy update will relax restrictions on gaming violence, helping gaming vloggers protect their monetization.
YouTube is expanding its Self Certification pilot.
The Self Certification program enables creators to self-report how their videos comply with YouTube’s advertising policies. In the next year, this program will be expanded to hundreds of thousands of YouTube Partner Program creators.
YouTube promises that, with this program, the more accurate creators are in their self-reporting, the more the system will trust them. It will give creators more control and provide them with specific feedback on monetization issues.
Overall, Susan Wojcicki’s final letter of 2019 addresses the platform’s responsibility to its creators. In 2020, new features and tools will protect monetization and give creators more control.
