Now more than ever, musicians are being discovered through the internet. From Justin Bieber to Tori Kelly, the internet (especially YouTube) is a great platform to get noticed. Up and coming singer Shawn Mendes is no exception.

He started out making 6-second videos on Vine from his home, and is now signed to Island Records. He has come out with his sophomore album Illuminate and is set for a world tour; all by the age of 18. Here are three reasons why Shawn Mendes has become a huge success.

1. He has real talent.

Talent may be a given when discussing music artists, but ironically, it’s not. There are tons of singers today that don’t know how to play an instrument or write a lyric, but for Shawn Mendes, that isn’t the case.

In interviews he tells readers how involved he is in the writing process. At only 16 years old, Mendes knew he wanted to be 100% involved in the song making process. In addition to songwriting, Mendes sings while playing the guitar at almost every performance. His love for music shows in the talent he possesses.

2. He sticks to what he does best.

Some artists need to have twenty background dancers, and an elaborate stage set. Some artists only need a guitar, and a stage. Mendes knows that acoustic and simple performances is what he does best.

There is nothing wrong with being an extravagant entertainer, but it isn’t for everyone. If Shawn Mendes came out with an extensive choreographed dance, it wouldn’t be genuine. Fans appreciate his authenticity and simplicity.

3. He still makes covers.

At first performing covers might seem odd for an established singer-songwriter; but that’s how he got his start! He played covers on vine and YouTube and got noticed by a huge record label.

It makes sense that he still performs covers from time to time. It makes fans think of the old him, before he got signed. He is also able to take different songs and transform it into his acoustic style.

Shawn Mendes is one of many that got their start on the internet, but he is one of few that took their internet fame, and became a legitimized music entertainer. At 18 years old, all of his success is only the beginning.
