How To Have A Productive Shoot Day

Filming a new YouTube video can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few months, depending on the type of content you create. No matter what your niche is, time is money, especially on your shoot day. The more productive you can be, the more time you can save.

Here’s how to have a productive shoot day.

Charge and organize your equipment the night before.

The easiest way to save time on your day of production is to be as prepared as possible the day before. Try to complete as many little tasks as you can, such as organizing your equipment. You should also charge your camera battery and an extra one for good measure. Clear your camera’s SD card, too.

If you’re filming on location, you should pack everything up so it’s ready to go as soon as you are. If you’re shooting at home, then you should arrange your lights and tripod the way you want them in your filming space. You can even go ahead and frame your shots.

Write a brief script or outline of what you plan to say.

Pre-planning will make your editing process easier as well as your filming process. To keep yourself from rambling or struggling to stay on topic while you’re on camera, write a script for your video. Organize it the way you want your final video to flow.

If you don’t want to write a full script, then you could create an outline instead. Summarize the topics you want to cover or the points you want to make. Then, when you’re recording, keep it near you so that you can use it as a guide.

Most importantly, clear your calendar of any other important obligations for the day.

When you’re filming, you should be focused on what you’re creating, not the long list of other things you need to do that day. Therefore, you should clear your calendar of any other important obligations on your set shooting days. Don’t schedule any doctor appointments, salon appointments, or meet-ups with friends.

Likewise, you should warn your friends and family that your phone will be on do not disturb while you’re filming. If you don’t feel comfortable being unreachable, then you can set your phone to vibrate or ask them to refrain from texting and calling unless absolutely necessary. If there will be other crew members on set, then you could make one of them the designated point of contact in case of an emergency.

In order to have a productive shoot day, you need to prepare in advance, create a script, and keep your schedule clear of other obligations. Stay focused and on schedule, and you’ll soar.
