American composer and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda dropped a music video this past week dedicated to Puerto Rico. In the past months, the US has had over three category four hurricanes hit Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico. With all the damages Hurricane Maria left behind in Puerto Rico, Lin-Manuel created a song that would benefit Puerto Rico.
Here is how Lin-Manuel’s video “Almost Like Praying” became a trending sensation.
1. He had a lot of Latin musicians doing vocals on the track.
Lin-Manuel decided to collaborate with many popular musicians on this track to make it unique. Some of the artists you see in the video are Marc Anthony, Camila Cabello, Gloria Estefan, Fat Joe, Luis Fonsi, John Leguizamo, Jennifer Lopez, Gina Rodriguez, and many more.
When you bring this many voices into a song, it makes it really powerful.
2. The lyrics follow a unique pattern.
If you pay close attention, you’ll notice that the song mentions all 78 towns in Puerto Rico. The song doesn’t say anything else other than the line “Almost Like Praying” and the town names.
If you’ve ever seen the movie West Side Story, then you probably know the song “Maria.” Lin-Manuel took this song and tried to incorporate some of its elements into his song. The reason why he chose this song was because Puerto Rico was hit by Hurricane maria, and the song’s title is “Maria.”
“Almost Like Praying” has become a trending sensation because of its powerful message. Puerto Rico suffered a lot of damages, and a song like this can remind everyone of what is happening. Also, the fact that he has all these musicians speaking up can bring a lot of awareness.
